Academic studies are structured in a way that allows families to worship together, study God’s Word together, and explore the subjects of history and science together. For the 2023-2024 school year, we are in year one of a four year cycle. Year one is titled, “In the Beginning,” and includes a study of:
● The Gospel Story through the great hymns of our faith
● God’s Word from Genesis through Esther, learning how every story is part of one big story, pointing us to Jesus
● Ancient history from Creation through the Resurrection
● Science through the days of Creation
Language Arts is incorporated across the family curriculum as students learn first the art of oral composition and then the art of written composition.
Reading is viewed as a communication process, a developmental process, and as a strategic process. Our students will progress from learning to read to reading to learn. We recognize that each child will progress through this process at a different rate. Reading instruction will take place in both small groups and whole group and will include the following components:
● Read Alouds
● Guided Reading
● Responding to Literature
● Independent Reading
● Strategy Instruction
● Content Area Reading
Math is taught developmentally, giving students ample time to master concepts before progressing, and allowing students to move beyond traditional grade level based instruction when ready.
At City Academy of Atlanta, we give students the opportunity to demonstrate and celebrate their learning in ways that honor their unique design and giftings. We use multiple authentic assessment tools to encourage the love of learning and the view of learning as a lifelong process.
